Diamond Multimedia introduces new sound board

Sonic Impact is a complete PCI audio solution with 64-voice wavetable synthesizer

Hanover/Starnberg, March 19, 1998 – Diamond Multimedia Systems Inc., (Nasdaq: DIMD), one of the leading suppliers on the Internet multimedia market, today announces the arrival of Sonic Impact, a complete audio solution with PCI interface. Sonic Impact supports classic standards – SoundblasterTM Pro – as well as the latest standards such as Microsoft’s DirectSoundTM and DirectSound 3DTM as well as power management (ACPI and PPMI). Sonic Impact accelerated sound output under DirectX, and DirectSound 3DTM from Microsoft – that means the CPU-overhead for processing sound is reduced significantly. The wavetable functions extend to a 64-voice wavetable synthesizer with DLS support. Simultaneous playback and recording of CD quality sound is delivered across the PCI interface. Up to 32 independent audio streams can be played back in CD quality. With an SNR exceeding 90 dB and a sample rate of 48 kHz, this sound board will be available in the shops from April 1998, priced $65.

"With Sonic Impact, the user is getting a totally versatile sound board, which offers true Plug & Play because of its PCI interface", explains Dirk Bilgram, Product Marketing, Diamond Multimedia. "It’s perfect for the games enthusiast with its fully SoundBlasterTM compatibility and support for the new Microsoft sound standards DirectSoundTM and DirectSound 3DTM. Also the ambitious audio users will love it for its DLS compatible 64-voice wavetable sythesizer and the full duplex interface for sound experiments or Internet telephony. By making this board with a PCI interface the user profits from an easy installation and reduced CPU load – which is important especially for games – while recording or playing back sound."

The Sonic Impact is ready for use with modern Windows operating systems – from Windows 3.1x, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 to the very latest versions Windows 98 and Windows NT 5.0. DOS 6.x support for games is included too. The sound board’s connections include a combined game and MIDI port, stereo speaker out, stereo line out, stereo line input and microphone input. Minimum system requirements are a 90 MHz Pentium processor, 8 MB RAM (16 MB recommended), 12 MB available hard disk space and a free PCI slot.
