Walkthrough #1: Toystore Front The Toystore front was completed for the CD-ROM game entitled "Blown Away" by Imagination Pilots under the creative direction of Doug Hienlien . This is a backdrop for video sequence in the game that was to take the place of a full blown 3D model. I began the piece as a traditional perspective drawing (paper & pencil) and when satisfied with the perspective, I transferred it into the Mac by tracing with a Wacom tablet. I then created some surface textures in Painter to be used as the brick wall and street. I distorted it in Adobe Photoshop 2.5 to get them into the perspective and then added the windows. At this point I started adding shape to the painting with transparent blends created in KPT Gradient Designer. To speed things along, I saved a couple of different color gradiants within KPT. The door frame was drawn in pencil and scanned into a separate file, outlined with the pen tool and copied three times. A metallic gold gradient from the Gradient Designer was applied to the three copies in different ways, and then pasted on top of one another until a pleasing effect was reached. The window reflections are a copy of the front of the building that was distorted in Fractal Design Painter. The ÒSamÕsÓ type outlines were drawn in Adobe Illustrator, rasterized in Photoshop, and loaded into an alpha channel. I distorted it with the Image>Effects>Perspective and Distort menu commands until it seemed to look correct in the perspective. From here on my memory is blurred (pardon the pun). All I can remember is that it was a series of feathered marques and blurs in a separate file that were then pasted into the main file. The red gradient was KPT Gradiant Designer. The side walk reflections were done by copying the entire image onto a different page, where it was flopped and distorted. It was then copied and pasted back into the original image. Using the composite control sliders, I protected the lighter pixels which produced a "watery" feeling to the outline. The coachlights were rendered in Adobe Dimensions. The lighting effects of coach lights were done in Painter. The long shadows were again painted with the Gradient Designer. The window reflection was painted in much the same manner as the reflection on the sidewalk; however I used the distort tool in Fractal Painter to get the swirl. I guess that was more of a run-through. #2: The Labyrinth The Labyrinth is a game board created for the CD-ROM game "Blown Away" by Imagination Pilots. The object of the game is to maneuver a steel ball through the labyrinth without falling into one of the holes on the board. The client provided me with the scans for the newspaper clipping and the two photos. I created the ÒBlown Away CardÓ in Adobe Illustrator, and distorted it in Photoshop. I began by laying out the board in Illustrator and presented it to the client for approval. Once I had the OK I rasterized the layout in Photoshop 2.5. In separate files I created three different wood patterns from KPT Texture Explorer. I selected three different base colors (dark, medium and light) and applied the Bleached White Ash as a procedural blend. The medium color was the main part of the board. I pasted it over the layout and made it transparent using the multiply command in the composite controls. Next I added the photos with drop shadows. The tape pieces on the corners where created by selecting a shape with the lasso tool and increasing the brightness while lowering the contrast. The dividing slats where cut from the lighter piece of wood created earlier and pasted into the positions. To add depth, I cut darker pieces of wood and pasted them to the sides of the dividers and the main board. The side boxes where added from the main board color and Gradient designer was applied to give them shape. To finish up the project, I painted the torn pieces over the holes and constructed the detonator and wire. -Terry Schmidbauer
